Senior Researcher on in-database analytics -- University of Oxford

Senior Researcher on in-database analytics -- University of Oxford

Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford

Duration: up to 2 years, with the possibility of extension until 31 May 2021

Salary scale: GBP 39,992 - 47,722

This position is funded by the ERC consolidator grant FADAMS (Foundations of Factorised Data Management Systems) and will be part of Professor Dan Olteanu's research team at Oxford.

The goal of this project is to investigate fundamental challenges in scalable data management at the confluence of structural compression (eg hypertree decompositions, factorized databases), distribution (eg, MapReduce-style processing), and approximation (eg, model-based lower and upper bounds) for database and machine learning workloads and to build an in-database analytics system. Current research results on these objectives can be found on the web page of the FDB research project: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/projects/FDB/index.html.

Whilst the role is a Grade 8 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at Grade 7 (GBP 31,604 - 38,833 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

You will hold a relevant PhD with post-qualification research experience (or be close to completion of a PhD if underfill), together with a strong publication record in one of the following areas and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field:

* theoretical computer science

* databases

* algorithms

* distributed systems

* machine learning.

Experience of supervising staff and making grant applications is desirable.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 23 October 2017. Interviews will be held on 31 October 2017.
